Dr. Vivian Klinger, the beautiful shrink of the quiet fishing town, Granite Cove, is found dead in her office. For Rose McNichols, this is undeniably a huge story compared to Senior Citizens’ Chowder Fest or bowling scores. Who would kill the town’s icon? Can one of the locals really do such thing? A Nose for Hanky Panky is the first installment of A Granite Cove Mystery series by Sharon Love Cook.
The premise of the story is a familiar ground but I always look forward to the mystery and the characters. The protagonist, Rose McNichols, is a local newspaper reporter for Granite Cove Gazette. I admire her perseverance for being a reporter in a town that hardly makes news at all, except for mundane things. Her investigations around town are enjoyable to read. While gathering important clues and information, we are introduced to other characters, the local folks themselves. I particularly love Doris, an important witness as she was the one who discovered Klinger’s dead body. Her strong tendency to be distracted in her story is funny and I sympathized with Rose who tries to glean important details from her.
Cook’s prose is uncomplicated but cleverly written with a delightful humor. The dialogue is sharp and the plot is very well-paced. This is not a heavy, action-packed mystery sleuth story. On the other hand, it is absolutely a fun, light mystery book to relax with. All in all, I enjoyed it and Granite Cove Mystery series is definitely worth following.
