A Notable Woman is the spellbinding story of the Shunammite woman, Marta, from the biblical passage, 2 Kings 4:8. Don Anderson tells the story of a powerful yet graceful woman who treats everyone with respect. She is adored by her servants and everyone she meets, including the powerful prophet of God, Elisha. Marta overcomes astounding trials beginning with her marriage to an abusive, hateful man. True to her nature, wise Marta pushes through, remaining strong and resilient. But there is one thing that does break her spirit, and that is her lack of fertility. The gifted prophet, knowing her heart’s deepest desire, promises to grant her wish. Never has Marta felt such joy! But many trials still lie ahead that will test Marta and her loved ones. When the prophet warns her of a plague, Marta obeys, leaving her hometown, Shunem, for seven years, remaining prosperous even as the town crumbles. A Notable Woman is a story of tragedy but also triumph, courage, and power.

Marta’s spirit of determination was striking; I was in awe of this wise and bold woman. Her story touched me in so many ways, and Don Anderson is a wonderful storyteller, making it easy to immerse oneself in the story. I shared the characters’ frustrations and tribulations and cheered aloud for their victories. One can learn so much from Marta, whose testimony is nothing short of astounding, most of all, her faith in a God that was unknown to her and her people. The connection she shared with the prophet Elisha attests to God’s mercy and grace, as she was not even a believer, yet received favor. Her respectful nature toward everyone, from the lowest to the most revered, spoke volumes. I most admired the relationship she had with her servants. Marta showed them nothing but love and kindness. If you are looking for an inspirational tale filled with dramatic surprises and miracles, then A Notable Woman by Don Anderson is for you.
