A Path to Acceptance is the second edition in The Prodigal Woman series by Lisa M. James. Forced to turn to prostitution to pay off her parents' debts, Penelope lives her life in an emotionless state. This is the only way she can survive living such an immoral life. Always down on her luck, Penelope can't believe it when a strange man steps up to free her from her prison. His name is Ryland. A mercenary for the wealthy, he is assigned to free her, and that is the end of the job. However, things change when he is forced to take responsibility for her and keep her under his protection. Nothing could have prepared him for his feelings for Penelope. Penelope is praying and working hard to regain her reputation without realizing her unwavering faith is changing Ryland’s approach to religion one day at a time.
Lisa M. James works her magic with Penelope and Ryland. The two of them are complex yet refreshing at the same time. The narrative switches between Ryland and Penelope to give us a good look into their minds and, later on, their hearts as well. The story is fantastic. I loved how it starts subtly but it picks up the pace and adds more charisma to the narrative as it progresses. Penelope is struggling but there is nothing she can do about it. Ryland, on the other hand, has a lot of anger because of his past and how he deals with it in the present. The emotions run high and Penelope struggles to accept what her present has become due to the wrongs of the past. But she is ready to move forward. Ryland is reluctant. A Path to Acceptance proved to be far more entertaining and captivating than I initially thought, and I loved it.
