A Sister’s Promise is a work of fiction in the historical drama subgenre. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Evelyn Zivalic. Set during the interwar years between the First and Second World Wars, we follow the story of two sisters growing up and how they experience life in Bohemia, where citizens are promised a fresh look at education and the flourishing art scene of what would soon become Czechoslovakia was born. But alongside this idyllic life, the sisters’ coming-of-age tale is also fraught with tragedy, and their naivety and innocence about the world around them will soon lead them to harsh lessons that must be learned.

Author Evelyn Zivalic transports readers seamlessly back to a time that appears to have been forgotten by the pages of history, obsessed with war and conflict as they are. But in this charming and often heart-wrenching novel, we see the hidden world of Bohemia for all its glory and artistry, a strange and refreshing contrast to the bitter conflict, austerity, and difficulty of the wider world then, and the wider world now. There are many emotional parallels with the coming-of-age plot that will be relatable to young women today, and indeed bigger lessons on love, loss, making mistakes, and surviving against the odds that everyone can learn from and engage with. I also really enjoyed the personal writing style which had me very closely connected to the characters and their world. Overall, I would definitely recommend A Sister’s Promise to fans of historical drama at its best.
