Katerina and Millie lost their parents when they were still young. After the loss, they started living with their grandparents, Anton and Ana Maryska. Anton was a furniture maker while Ana was a writer. Mary was their only child so the grandparents were all the girls had left. The girls grew up fast and Katerina developed an interest in acting and Millie worked at a sugar mill. There she met Charles Kroch. Charles liked Millie from the first day and it was no surprise that he proposed to her although he was much older than her. They got married and had a son, Tony, but unfortunately, Millie died when Tony was still young. Tony moved to his great-grandparents' home after he lost his mother. However, his father Charles found love again and married Rosa so Tony had to go back to live with his father and stepmom. Will Tony be happy in his new home? And will Katerina ever make it as an actress? Find out in A Sister's Promise by Evelyn Zivalic.

Set in the late 20th century, A Sister's Promise has that unique old feel to it. It's a short story that can be read even while you're taking a break at work. The story was unique and interesting. Everything was realistic and the main characters were well developed. The book is entertaining with a touch of romance. I was attracted to the Czech culture and language so this story was perfect for me. The characterization was top notch and it was easy to follow. Some parts made me emotional, especially after Millie's death. I enjoyed reading A Sister's Promise and I would love to read other books by Evelyn Zivalic. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an intriguing short story.
