A Superhero Called Doberman is the first book in The Superhero Doberman series by authors John Stovall and Shami Stovall. The story follows Leon Lewis, who lives alone in a small apartment in Sacramento. Thirty-one years ago, people began to be born with a facet gland that gives them superpowers. Leon grew up loving heroes, but his own powers are dangerous. So instead of a hero, he became a vigilante named Anubis at night. In the day, he keeps to himself so no one gets hurt. Things change when his neighbor Rachel Anderson is targeted by the Kings in Yellow, a street gang that makes people disappear. Leon cannot just watch. But using his powers could kill him. Anubis is death to friends and foes alike. Can Leon save Rachel? Can he stay in control?

Authors John and Shami Stovall created a fast-paced and entertaining story set in a world that feels like the real Marvel or DC universe. I absolutely loved Leon. He is awkward, kind, and always making puns, and his scenes with Rachel and the hero Steelant had a lot of heart. Flo and her hairless dog, Mr. Pickles, made me laugh more than once. The yellow-wearing gangsters were silly enough to be enjoyable but still felt like a real threat. The chapter titles are clever nods to classic comic stories, and the power tiers and traits give every fight a game-like feel that LitRPG fans will enjoy. The pace never slowed down, and the ending sets up the next book nicely. A Superhero Called Doberman is perfect for readers who love superheroes, humor, and a protagonist who has to learn how to be a hero.
