Aberration (Children of the Consortium Book 2) by Cathy McCrumb continues her immersive Christian sci-fi saga with a gripping second installment. Recorder once again faces impossible odds. After narrowly surviving the events of the first novel, she is compelled to return to the hazardous environment of Pallas Station. A mysterious illness has struck the crew, rogue drones threaten lives, and the omnipresent Consortium is watching her every move. Bound by her unwavering sense of duty, Recorder risks everything to save her friends, even under the stifling supervision of an Elder determined to keep her in line. As danger mounts and secrets unfold, she must rely on her inner strength and growing circle of allies to confront threats both external and within, revealing how hope and sacrifice can shape a future even in the face of ruthless control.

Author Cathy McCrumb has a way of writing that sparks deeper thoughts with every moment, creating a cerebral high-stakes story that still retains deeply human questions of faith, identity, and purpose. Recorder is a mysterious concept in herself as a central figure for the story, and the moral complexity and emotional growth are attended to with close attention to narrative detail, making her a standout heroine. We readers become attached to her the more she experiences humanity, and this plot certainly has tons of twists to challenge her with as the action-packed turns raise the stakes without ever losing the soul of the story. I also loved the descriptions of distant vistas and hazardous places that gave an eerie but rather beautiful sense of scale to the story. Between McCrumb’s vivid worldbuilding and the character-driven tension, there’s plenty for fans of science fiction and cerebral dramas to enjoy here. Overall, Aberration is a must-read for fans of smart science fiction.
