In Abigail Rose and the Enchanted Kingdom by Moy Cameron, we discover that all Abigail needs to do is believe. That’s what others told her. Even though her friends could fly, Abigail could not and that made her sad. Through determination, the power of imagination, and the simple task of believing, Abigail set out on a journey to find her wings and her ability to fly. She took her best friend, her little pink cat Pinky, with her and the two went as far as the wicked witch who lived on the hill. It was forbidden to go there, but Abigail was running out of ideas. Despite Pinky’s misgivings, she followed Abigail who was demonstrating considerable courage to face a wicked witch – all so that she could fly like her friends.

Moy Cameron’s picture book story, Abigail Rose and the Enchanted Kingdom, is a sweet, charming tale filled with adventure, fantasy, magic, and love. The plot introduces the setting with bright, bold, colorful illustrations and words to describe the incredible enchanted magical kingdom of Scholar, where “...trees had pink leaves. Sunflowers were red, roses were blue, and there were many fantastic things to see and do.” Young readers will instantly be immersed in the magic of this story as they follow the simple language with lots of descriptive adjectives. Abigail is introduced as a young girl who wants to be like all her friends – she wants to be able to fly. It appears to be a cool thing to do. Don’t all children want to be able to do what their friends can do? But Abigail must prove herself first, and, she must have the courage to believe in herself, to believe strongly enough that she can find the means to save her best friend, Pinky. Powerful lessons for young readers to learn.
