A call for help unravels a plot to return native land to its rightful owners in R.L. Keck’s Absence of Mercy. The story features two explosive crises. In Wyoming, a radical “Professor” is said to be falsifying soil contamination reports, and E.J. Lonetree is dispatched to investigate. The professor believes the land was stolen from them in 1863 by a white man who coerced his ancestors into signing the Ruby Valley Treaty. E.J. is forced into a confrontation with his Delta Force brother, Esau. Meanwhile, in Florida, Theresa Sullivan is struggling with aggressive ovarian cancer while her ex-husband, Devin Carmichael, is determined to murder her for her inheritance. Her fiancé, Chief Warrant Officer Mack Turner, leads the elite GREEN Team. Can they stop the violence that is already set in motion?

R.L. Keck’s storytelling is exceptional, and the author employs atmospheric writing with drama to move the story forward. The conflict relies on the threats that involve the environment and the characters to create the sense of urgency in the pacing. There is explosive action, a motorcycle chase, and gunfights. Characters are rock-solid. At some points, I found myself examining the human relationships and ecological crimes. The clash between E.J.’s spiritual Shoshone heritage and his brother’s mercenary choices, as well as the ruthlessness of the professor in his pursuit of a land grab, raises questions in the story. Absence of Mercy skillfully examines medical survival, indigenous sovereignty, and fraternal redemption. The intensity of this thriller is reminiscent of The Bone Labyrinth by James Rollins and Jack Carr’s The Terminal List.
