Adaptable Teaching: 30 Practical Strategies for All School Contexts (Building Your Teaching Toolbox) by Jonathan Ryan Davis and Maureen Connolly is a helpful guide for educators working in various classroom environments. As Lawrence Pendergast notes in the foreword, teachers learn most effectively from the experience of other teachers. Davis and Connolly are expert teacher educators and consultants who are fully aware of this. They brought together a group of teachers from diverse backgrounds and this work is the result of that collaboration. The book is divided into four main sections, each dealing with an important area of a teacher’s professional life, including classroom climate, planning, instructional, and professional developmental strategies. In each section, the concepts are described in detail and real-life examples of their applications are shared. At the end of each chapter, sample material in the form of tables and questionnaires is provided which readers can modify according to their classroom needs.
In Adaptable Teaching, Jonathan Ryan Davis and Maureen Connolly deliver on what the title promises. In each chapter, numerous adaptations are suggested depending on the circumstances. Different lesson options are provided for elementary, middle, and high-grade levels. Extra tips are included for English language, special needs, and gifted students. Varying strategies are discussed for situations where time is limited, classes are large, or access to technology is restricted. It is recognized that veteran and early career teachers will have different needs and adjustments are proposed. There is an entire chapter devoted to Culturally Responsive/Sustaining Teaching. Throughout the book, hints for working in culturally diverse classrooms are provided. I especially liked the fact that in some lessons, new approaches are suggested according to the teacher’s personality (reserved versus outgoing). This is an essential addition to every teacher’s toolbox.
