Parenting can be an exciting as well as a challenging experience. While most parents want what’s best for their children, determining what exactly is best for them is perhaps the most demanding part. What many fail to realize is that parenting is not just about tending to a child’s physical, emotional, and social needs, but also spiritual needs. In UniverSoul Promises, Efrat Shokef, Ph.D., offers insight into how this can be achieved. Shokef views parenting as a sacred journey, shared between the parent and the child, in which both must mutually evolve. Shokef presents nine UniverSoul Promises—foundational agreements that souls make before birth, which include Truth, Attentiveness, The Motion of Love, Reciprocity, Humanity, Healing, Embracing the Journey, Creativity, and Co-Creation—to help parents navigate this journey.

UniverSoul Promises by Efrat Shokef, Ph.D., is a must-read for parents, child caregivers, counsellors, therapists, and anyone looking to enhance their spiritual and emotional well-being. I found the fables, spiritual stories, and questions in the story thought-provoking and spiritually enlightening. I learned a lot, like in Nadia’s story, I learned about the four layers of truth, which include the literal, emotional/thought, the soul’s journey, and the energetic layer, all of which are important in its perception. Shokef argues that parents must fulfil the nine UniverSoul Promises, which I found profoundly spiritually and intellectually resonant, to create conditions in which children will thrive and become authentic and spiritually aligned. This book is a fountain of knowledge, providing parents with tools to help them better understand themselves, their children, and the unique connections they share.

UniverSoul Promises (Foundations for Creating the Conditions Our Children Need to Thrive in Times of Transformation) by Efrat Shokef, Ph.D, is a parenting book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of prospective parents, those in charge of children, and current parents. Parenting is not just about guiding a child in life and keeping them safe; it is also a shared, reciprocal spiritual journey to be taken alongside them. The book is not a how-to parenting book, but rather an invitation and a map to embrace your inner knowledge, feelings, and spiritual path. The book contains case studies, questions, parables, affirmations, integrated activities, and more. Are you ready to use your connections with your heart and spirit to guide you on your parenting path?

UniverSoul Promises by Efrat Shokef, Ph.D, is a well-written parenting book with an imaginative cover that grabbed my interest with its whimsical feel. So many parenting books look and read like a standard how-to guide or a textbook with no room for personal feelings and knowledge. This book throws all of that away by encouraging me to embrace what I know and feel and to use it as a guiding light in following its roadmap. I appreciated the focus on guiding children to stay true to who they are, as I feel that so many books focus too much on encouraging children to conform in a certain way or change. The author does not do that; instead, the focus is on gentle guidance, spiritual awareness, and learning to understand the energy and spirit of your child. Overall, I found this book to be an educational and inspirational read that I would recommend to anyone who has or plans to have children, as it has inspired me to rethink how I approach parenting.

In UniverSoul Promises, Efrat Shokef had an accident as a young mother and had a near-death experience, which left her questioning who she was and what parenting is about. Parenting is a journey that changes all the time as children grow up and circumstances change. This makes it important to question everything, to address the unique challenges that arise from various factors and limiting beliefs that have been inculcated in us over time. By being parents, we have an obligation to raise children who grow up to be responsible adults. Ethics should come from within and go beyond issues like religion to make it possible to raise individuals who are beyond petty sentiments. How do we align our lives to make sure we keep the promises we made to our children by being parents?

For parents or those aspiring to be parents, UniverSoul Promises by Efrat Shokef, PhD, is a must-read. In a world that is increasingly becoming greedier and more self-centered, the message of caring for Mother Earth for the benefit of all human beings will resonate with many readers. I loved the emphasis on raising children who are spiritually aware and mindful of others, since children are the hope of tomorrow. Efrat offers simple and applicable advice on parenting using her own experiences, which makes the work very effective in passing on the intended message. The reader will also appreciate the easy-to-understand language used, which makes the work accessible to all audiences. I look forward to reading something by Efrat Shokef.

Universoul Promises by Efrat Shokef, PhD, is a guide to raising children in a changing and sometimes uncertain world, using storytelling, personal insights, and practical ideas. It is grounded in the ideals to help kids grow with confidence, connection, and emotional strength. Several chapters discuss different “Promises,” such as healing, reciprocity, and creativity, presented through short fables, real-life examples, and spiritual themes. There are also questions to help readers reflect on the topics of each chapter, like “What is attentiveness?” or “Are you attentive?” It presents a framework rather than suggesting that strict rules should be used in supporting children. Adults can also learn more about themselves while reading it.

Reading Universoul Promises by Efrat Shokef, PhD, felt uplifting and surprisingly grounding, especially from my perspective as an educator. The writing is warm and inviting without feeling overwhelming, and the author mixes stories with simple reflections that made me stop and think. The ‘Explore’ questions are a great addition that helps parents/caregivers think about their own families. My favorite one is: “What makes your children sparkle?” This book is very approachable, which assists with some of the heavier topics, such as discussing when a kid’s needs are not being met. For example, there’s a line describing a child needing a hug, but a parent ignores them because they have more pressing tasks at the time. I think that will prompt readers to consider whether they do the same thing. Fans of gentle parenting books, spiritual self-help, and reflective teaching will likely enjoy this book since it’s both heartfelt and easy to understand. I enjoyed reading it, and any adult with youngsters in their lives will find something meaningful in its pages.
