Aestrangel the Risen is an epic dark fantasy novel by Maria DeVivo. Aestrangel, the commanding general of Lucifer's Order of the Daimons, is haunted by memories of her time with Jake Parker. After defying Lucifer's orders, she becomes a captive in the Black Keep of Gehenna, tortured and abused by the very demons that she devours. But after Lucifer's daughter Alukah rips off her wings, Aestrangel finds herself in the Asphoedel alongside Malek and returns to Gehenna stronger and more ruthless than ever. She unleashes hell on Earth on Lucifer's behalf and becomes a pivotal figurehead in the Daimons' war against the Order of the Angelos. But she is not yet done, as Lililth and her daughter soon find out. While Lucifer has a final confrontation with the Creator, Aestrangel fully embraces her dark destiny.

Twisted, bloody, and gory, Aestrangel the Risen is a gripping villain origin story. Maria DeVivo draws from biblical scripture and crafts an action-packed epic fantasy tale that gets its hooks in you from the first page and refuses to let go until the last. The dark and foreboding atmosphere of the narrative is deeply immersive, and as a reader, you never know which way the story is going to go next. The characters are all larger-than-life, which suits the tone and themes of the overall saga. Aestrangel's descent into full-blown villainy is fascinating to read. Her relationship with Malek sits in perfect juxtaposition relative to how she acts with others. There are so many thrilling moments in the book, and not just reserved for the action sequences but also during various character interactions. Dark fantasy fans are in for a wild ride with this one!
