We Are Home by Kevin Dobbs is a children’s illustrated book about immigration and how the attitudes of some can distress others. One day, as Kasey walks home after school, she sees a message written on a wall. Confused, Kasey runs home and tells her mother about it. In response, her mom explains how some people who have been in that place for a long time don’t want new people to live there. She goes on to describe how their community is built on all the individuals who live there, each person a special piece. Kasey decides to write to her neighbors and asks them to contribute fabrics for a quilt she wants to create. How will her neighbors and friends respond?

Immigration in society today is a touchy subject, and this book presents a peaceful and kind way of bringing people together. Its focus is on building community, highlighting the positives, and addressing negative attitudes we so often see. Instead of seeing characters argue over one’s right to live, the story shifts to valuing the people who choose to live there. The artwork is bright, colorful, and will appeal to the target audience. It serves as a springboard for other ideas that people can use to help bring society together. We Are Home by Kevin Dobbs bypasses the destructive attitudes of immigration and emphasizes that kindness is the key in bringing people together and helping them to feel like they are home, wherever that home may be. Highly recommended.
