Hazel Sallington is the daughter of a baron. Sadly for her, her mother passed away when she was very young, and her father remarried. When he also passed, her stepmother, the new Lady Sallington, showed her true colors, banishing Hazel to a life of servitude to her and her two daughters. One day, at a chance encounter, she meets Stephen Worthington, the twelfth Duke of Caldwell. It’s love at first sight for the two of them, and he vows that one day they will marry. Unfortunately for Hazel, her wicked stepmother will do everything she can to prevent this from ever happening. Do Hazel and Stephen get their happy ending, or is the stepmother victorious? Read Against All Odds by Luis Ammerman to find out.

Does this story sound familiar? Of course, it’s a take on the classic Cinderella tale. But taking Cinderella and transporting her to Regency England is sheer brilliance on behalf of talented author Luis Ammerman. In this instance, the stepmother, the wicked Lady Sallington, is evil personified. She makes Disney witches look like good fairies. Readers can’t help but feel sorry for the Cinderella character (in this case, Hazel) as her life is put through the wringer time and again. Against All Odds features all the classic Regency romance tropes that readers expect. There are the star-crossed lovers, evil villains (or villainesses), threats to run off to Scotland and elope, and a matronly dowager who gets a pivotal scene. Lovers of Regency romances will get everything they expect from this wonderful story.
