Against the Wind is a historical romance by Ann Nolder Heinz set during the American Civil War, when the Union fought the Confederacy. It takes place in 1863 and 1864, during which the author unravels the lives of Lieutenant Carl Fielding and his betrothed, Gwendalyn Pickering, a qualified doctor working at the Women’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It was something very new for women to be doctors in this era. The main characters are Carl, Gwen, Miss Elizabeth Van Lew, Davit Hauck, and Cora, married to Peter Ware. Cora is Carl’s sister. These delightful characters take the reader on a journey of adventure that takes place over a period of approximately 6 months, if not less.

There are passages where Ann Nolder Heinz does not sugarcoat how cruel human beings can be to each other, especially in a time of war, which is rather sad. At times, the reader will be on the edge of their seat, wondering if the main characters will ever reach a place of safety under the Union flag and not the Confederate flag. Many historical facts and places are mentioned in the narrative, which makes it very interesting as the reader can actually picture where these places are. This is a page-turning romance adventure and would make a good book for a young adult reader just starting to find out what suits them. The conclusion is the best-kept secret, and the perfect way to end this story. A most entertaining and wonderful story. I recommend Against the Wind as it is definitely worth more than one read.
