Alaska Travelogue by State - Experience Both the Ordinary and Obscure by Amber Richards is a fascinating glimpse into what is truly the “last frontier”. I have always loved Alaska and to read about it from someone who calls it their home is indeed a pleasure. Amber Richards takes us through the various facets of Alaska and provides us with a thorough glimpse into all of the various regions of Alaska; what to see, where to go, and what to do. The book is divided into different parts and, depending on what the reader may be interested in, one can skip around to national parks, wildlife, Alaska fairs and events, outdoor activities such as fishing, canoeing, sledding, and much more. Alaska Travelogue by State also contains historical information about Alaska, its early settlers, the gold rush, ghost towns, and things to do in both summer and winter. All in all, a great little read for anyone who is interested in Alaska, whether they are visiting, staying, or just learning about it.

Amber Richards is a native of the Pacific Northwest and I especially enjoyed her anecdotes about her personal experiences while living in rugged Alaska. She gives a realistic portrayal of both the beauty and dangers of Alaska, and how it is important to always keep in mind that the weather here can change minute by minute, which can be dangerous because of the cold. I loved reading about her encounters with wild life and, of course, the magnificence of the Aurora Borealis. Amber has written a great little book about Alaska and I look forward to reading her other travelogue books about other places in the United States.
