In Alex Miller and the Legacy Bearers, Emily Shortall takes readers into a world where mythology and modern life collide. Twelve-year-old Alex Miller accidentally finds a mysterious pendant while packing up his late great-grandmother’s attic. What begins as a curious discovery quickly becomes a journey filled with tremendous adventures. Alex learns he is the descendant of legendary heroes. His best friend Rory and a group of younger Legacy Bearers join forces with Alex as he sets out to rescue the goddess Nike from the underworld, but every turn is filled with challenges and secrets. Alex finds himself navigating the expectations that come with being a hero, the weight of responsibility that comes with upholding his family’s legacy, and the growing bond with his fellow companions as they contend with trials that will test their strength, courage, and unity.
Alex Miller and the Legacy Bearers stands out for its balance of action, humor, and heart. The pacing is brisk with new twists and challenges introduced in each chapter, keeping readers fully invested in the adventure. There is much to be said for the character development — Alex’s character is relatable because readers see him grow in confidence and leadership while Rory’s loyalty and humor add depth to the team dynamic. Emily Shortall inserts Greek mythology into the story seamlessly, making the twists educational and exciting. Alex Miller and the Legacy Bearers is perfect for middle-grade readers who enjoy adventurous tales similar to Percy Jackson & The Olympians. However, there is enough originality and charm to captivate older readers who love mythology-inspired adventures as well. Overall, this is a thrilling, heartfelt adventure that will inspire readers to embrace their inner hero and the power of friendship.
