Aliens Venmoed Me a Trillion Dollars by Daniel Lawrence Abrams is a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek short story/novela precursor to a full-length novel wherein alien conspiracy theory debunker Douglas Dawkins and his astronomer wife Lena Fierro are, each in their own way, drawn into an alien-driven plot to prevent humans from learning of their existence before humanity is ready for such knowledge. The aliens’ approbation arrives in the form of enormous, untraceable deposits to Dawkins’ Venmo account, culminating in the titular trillion dollars. Along the way, various agents of chaos, some near misses, intergalactic hijinks, and creative use of AI figure in the mix, resulting in a fast-paced, humorous, highly entertaining blink-and-you-miss-it story sure to delight readers with a taste for lively narrative, zippy dialogue, and impeccably drawn, well-rounded characters.

The author has a keen grasp of the unique kind of larger-than-life but somehow authentic dialogue that will keep readers turning the page; in addition, the story is jam-packed with enough plot twists and pivot points to capture and hold reader interest through the planned novel-length expansion or perhaps even a series. The characters are so clearly drawn and compelling that they would translate easily to film or TV, and the degree of detail packed into this adventure in short story form is nothing short of astonishing. Aliens Venmoed Me a Trillion Dollars by Daniel Lawrence Abrams is a rare and superbly crafted gem, perfect for a quick escape and clearly the work of a gifted writer at the top of his game.

Aliens Venmoed Me a Trillion Dollars by Daniel Lawrence Abrams follows Douglas Dawkins, who ostensibly kills an NSA agent in rural Alaska, triggering an intense federal investigation led by Commander Beth Picotte. Dawkins is contacted by his mother, Wanda, who claims to be an alien and offers him one trillion dollars to finance the dissemination of alien knowledge. Astronomer Lena Fierro approaches Dawkins, an alien skeptic, to prove alien contact, unaware of his role in triggering a virus that devastates the NSA infrastructure. Major Sajeda Irfan links the attack to Dawkins and escalates countermeasures. Wanda demonstrates alien technology via a satellite laser with catastrophic consequences, with Dawkins and Lena left to clean up. Parallel to this, a tech mogul facing terminal illness and legal troubles pressures lab worker Stu to deliver a powerful device.

Aliens Venmoed Me a Trillion Dollars by Daniel Lawrence Abrams is a sharply written, inventive, and fantastic story that was so different from what I imagined going in. It is filled with imaginative precision. In a testament to Abrams's skill as a writer, the characters are all extremely well fleshed out, given the length of the story. All of them act with distinctive logic, even when placed in surreal or morally ambiguous situations, and their conversations maintain a quick, believable rhythm. The story has some great twists and a moderate body count, two in particular that were managed really well, and even with some well-placed turns, the narrative never drifts into chaos. Overall, this is a perfectly paced, grounded story with a clear sense of purpose, and the result is smart, fun, and just plain good science fiction.
