At eighteen, Harper Hudson, the main protagonist of All that Matters (Broken Book 2) by Michelle Congdon, is a starlet at risk. To outsiders, she seems a tease and a tearaway on the verge of becoming trouble on two legs. However, most outsiders do not see the tragedy that haunts her and the demons that goad her on towards self-destruction - the tragic death of her twin sister, Quinn, four years earlier. When a serious scandal threatens to bring disgrace on the whole family, her famous actress mother decides to intervene and sends Harper halfway across the world to spend some time with her down-to-earth family in Sydney, Australia. The move puts her on a collision course with her dishy cousin, Jackson. Will he be able to keep her self-destructive urges in check and help her to deal with the tragedy that still haunts her? Or will his own hidden demons knock them both off kilter?
All That Matters (Broken Book 2) by Michelle Congdon shifts between two viewpoints, that of Harper and Jackson. Both are realistically captured. Harper's voice seems particularly authentic. Imagine her as a thinking man's Lindsey Lohan, but with a somewhat self-deprecating sense of humor, with her fame almost, but not quite taking the role of trickster-antagonist - at times opening doors, but all too often creating the kind of obstacles that cut her off from the help she so badly needs. On another level, the story also throws out a lifeline to young people who may be battling invisible monsters similar to those besetting Harper, since tragedy and exploitation can occur at all levels of society, not just among the rich and famous. It would make an entertaining and thought-provoking read for the New Adult market.
