All the Pretty Roses: A Tale of Bittersweet Love and Betrayal by Sarah J. Heidelberg follows the story of Mercedes and her experiences with love and betrayal in college. Her father warned her about things like this but of course, what child listens to their parents? Getting involved with a senior sparks the onset of many events and many lessons to be learned.
All the Pretty Roses is a unique book and unlike anything I’ve come across before. The wording and sentence structure are purposeful while still having a poetic feel to them at times. I really found this story to be impactful and thought-provoking, the metaphorical aspects within the story really give you the reader food for thought. Overall, I found this book to be really enjoyable and I hope more people will read it as I’m sure there are many relatable experiences within the story for the reader.
The narration by Jason Ilori was done spectacularly and what surprised me was hearing music in the background to accompany the narrator. This was my first time encountering this in an audiobook and I feel that it added depth to the overall experience. Ilori has such a clear and confident voice and his tone really fits well with the story and its characters. His pacing and control were also really good and just helped to elevate the story and bring it to life.
