Alliance by Tyler Svec, the first book in The Kingdom series, will appeal to young adult fantasy, action, and adventure fans. Eighteen-year-old Roy Van Doren buys a mountain cabin, craving a simple life. Roy has an accident on the way to his new house but manages to reach his cabin on foot, unaware that a mysterious stranger is following him. Soon, Roy learns that the cabin hides a door leading to a parallel world full of wonders. Deciding to explore it, Roy meets and befriends three siblings, Cyrus, Alexander, and Abby Reno. Cyrus, who studies at the Hentar Academy, wants to become one of the Hentar Knights and serve the Alliance, a local government. However, Alexander, Abby, and Roy do not trust the Alliance and prefer to join the rival Chrystarian Academy. They must undergo rigorous training that includes taming the magnificent flying Griffins. As the possibility of a confrontation with the Alliance takes shape, Roy and his friends face tough decisions.
Tyler Svec's Alliance is an engaging fantasy with a philosophical twist. The book gives young adult readers food for thought, touching on moral values, freedom of will, and fighting against tyranny. The author offers unique and impressive world-building and interesting character development. A teasing mystery surrounds Roy, an "off-worlder." Roy tries to find his way in life and proves himself wise beyond his years. He perceives his new reality with a bit of dry humor and faces danger calmly and courageously. Roy is a lovable character with great potential. Svec skillfully combines intense action scenes with comical situations and balances humorous interactions with thoughtful conversations. The fascinating Griffins and their opposites, terrifying Dreygars, are a vivid metaphor for the battle between good and evil. The well-paced narration culminates in a spectacular ending that hints at more exciting adventures in the next installment of this compelling series.
