In her book American Charm, Hungarian-born author Andrea Bizderi Whelan offers the reader an unusual main character in the form of Angela Hargity. Angela has just turned twenty-five, and she has a history of heartbreaking romances...the latest being with a married man. Angela is a hard-working business woman who loves to party at night with her friends. Enter Sam, an American firefighter from California who seeks his fortunes in Hungary.
Despite ongoing warnings from her friends regarding Sam's checkered past with women, Angela becomes fascinated with the man. They strike up a sexual relationship which is considered only casual by both. When the relationship turns serious, there are ongoing power struggles in which accusations fly and the reader wonders why the couple remains together. Sam has a business partner named Tyne who further complicates the relationship mix. Both Angela and the reader are caught being suspicious of the business as well as Sam's intentions toward Angela. The prominent part of the book involves the pulling apart and coming together of the couple due to their obvious emotional immaturity. In between the couple's power struggles, the reader is introduced to a dysfunctional family and to friends who are perceived by Angela as not emotionally available to her.
The author does a highly credible job of portraying Angela as a somewhat spoiled and emotionally immature woman. Although the reader is pulled toward rooting for emotional growth, the last few pages of the story leave Angela with impulsive decision-making and spur-of the moment conclusions. If nothing else, the reader finds him or herself charmed by a character who refuses to grow up.
