Michael Segedy brings readers a thought-provoking sci-fi novel in An Amazing Thing Happened on the Way to the Future. After waking up from their suspended lives 200 years in the future, Jacob Ladder and Emma Fine are welcomed into the post-apocalyptic human colony of Sumpseris by Dr. David Sagan. Jake and Emma take a while to truly understand how the inhabitants have adjusted to their lives, some choosing to rejuvenate themselves repeatedly after a few decades, while others select life cessation. Decades later, Jake and Emma's grandchild, Jimi, listens to stories of his grandparents and human history as recounted by the silicone substrate, IKE. IKE also reveals the truth about the Great Exodus and how Sagan and Curzweil's followers chose two different paths to save humanity.
An Amazing Thing Happened on the Way to the Future is one of those stimulating sci-fi books that makes you think about the impact of technological progress (especially concerning AI) and how it can fundamentally alter humanity's future. It's a fantastic sequel to Michael Segedy's Into the Twilight. The entire narrative revolves around conversations between different characters. Segedy infuses a lot of philosophical ponderings into the narrative, some of which I found to be profound. The characters are well done, but the themes and the scientific lore are the book's highlights. IKE is a fascinating character, and his conversation with Jimi toward the end was my favorite part of the book. If you're a sci-fi fan, you're going to enjoy this one!
