First-time author and head coach, Roy Rhino is a USC graduate who dedicated his life to bringing a championship football season to the Gladstone Gladiator football program. Facing many obstacles, he pulled through to win the honor of San Gabriel Valley, Coach of the Year in 1977. Roy went on to become very successful in real estate and now lives the high life in Newport Beach.
First-time author Jim Joyce grew up on the border of Azusa and Covina, California. He was one of only a few players to ever be bestowed the honor of being first team All-League on both offense (junior year) and defense (senior year). After high school Jim went on to become successful in sales and now lives near his children in Oregon.
J.R. (Jeff) Wirth grew up in the little town of Azusa, California. He has written several books and was a “ghost writer” in An Unlikely Season. But never did he feel more passionately than when he was producing “Destined.” As the unlikely quarterback of the Gladiators, he shows his warm regard to the coaches and players he suited up with in An Unlikely Season.

Gladstone High School's varsity championship-winning football team went through such a run in 1977. In An Unlikely Season, J.R. Wirth, Jim Joyce, Roy Rhino, and other contributors share their thoughts on what led the Gladstone Gladiators to pull off this incredible feat during that unforgettable season. J.R. Wirth was a junior who used to run drills with the seniors at Citrus College in 1977. Throughout the season, he became the team's quarterback. Despite the initial animosity between the juniors and seniors, junior players like Armando Ybarra and Kenny Vega showed their worth on the gridiron battlefield while seniors like Jerry Levinson and Dan Sanderlin led the "Pride Drills." Coach Roy Rhino also had to navigate his share of challenges.
