Sometimes, the stars align and sports teams go through unprecedented winning runs that seem implausible beforehand. Gladstone High School's varsity championship-winning football team went through such a run in 1977. In An Unlikely Season, J.R. Wirth, Jim Joyce, Roy Rhino, and other contributors share their thoughts on what led the Gladstone Gladiators to pull off this incredible feat during that unforgettable season. J.R. Wirth was a junior who used to run drills with the seniors at Citrus College in 1977. Throughout the season, he became the team's quarterback. Despite the initial animosity between the juniors and seniors, junior players like Armando Ybarra and Kenny Vega showed their worth on the gridiron battlefield while seniors like Jerry Levinson and Dan Sanderlin led the "Pride Drills." Coach Roy Rhino also had to navigate his share of challenges.
An Unlikely Season is a true inspirational sports story that demonstrates the value of grit, resilience, and fortitude. In this book, J.R. Wirth, Jim Joyce, Roy Rhino, and others give a comprehensive account of every play-by-play and acknowledge all the people who played a part in bringing the Varsity Football Championship to Gladstone High School in that memorable season of 1977. The authors share their struggles and recall what they had to overcome in their personal lives on their own and on the gridiron as a team. As someone with little knowledge about American Football, I found this book very informative, heartfelt, and motivational. Gladstone High School's achievements should be made known to the world, and this book does that and more. If you're into true, invigorating sports stories, do not miss out on this book!
