And Time Stopped: Dimension 9 is the third book of the Keeper of the Watch series by Kristen L. Jackson. After traversing the magical world of Dimension 8, teenage keepers of two of the three remaining watches allowing interdimensional travel, Chase Walker and Alyx Eris, alongside their hybrid pup, Bo, travel to the parallel world of Dimension 9. Soon after their arrival, they rescue Chase's former friend Mason Moore from committing suicide. As Chase and Alyx roam the town, they encounter an obnoxious school bully named Jared Young making life difficult for the students of Dune Harbor High. Seeking to put an end to Jared's habitual abuse, they enroll themselves in the school. While Chase and Alyx try to help the students, Chase's familial history makes things complicated. Meanwhile, an unexpected tragedy shakes everyone's lives.
Kristen L. Jackson tells an absorbing young adult fantasy tale that sheds light on some serious topics which are becoming increasingly relevant in these times. Despite the fantastical elements of the story, the narrative primarily focuses on the issues related to school bullying, teen anxiety and depression, parental neglect and abuse, and the harmful impact they have on the psyche of teenagers. The author handles the sensitive subject matter with the required nuance and depth that makes the narrative all the more powerful and hard-hitting. The plotting is intricate, taking unexpected twists and turns you never see coming. Chase and Alyx are two likable main protagonists you won't have any trouble rooting for. I thoroughly enjoyed And Time Stopped: Dimension 9, and I recommend it to young adult fantasy lovers.
