Anticipation Day by Jeff Michelson begins with the creation of an escapist program, then continues years later after the government project becomes public policy. In the program, American citizens are offered one extraordinary day each year to live inside a hyper-real simulation built around their personal desires. For five friends, their first Anticipation Day brings more than just fantasy. One seeks lost history, another chases fame denied by fate, while others try to reclaim moments stolen by time or pain. But inside the simulation, easy escapes give way to more than they bargained for. As real life resumes, their simulated experiences leave lingering consequences: some clarifying, some destabilizing. Set against the backdrop of a society outsourcing fulfillment, Anticipation Day lays bare the cost of rewriting reality, even for just one day. “We wanted to try it and see how it made us feel. It might turn out to be a bad idea if it leaves us feeling worse, but we want to find out.”
Jeff Michelson’s Anticipation Day is a wildly ambitious deep dive into humanity’s desire for meaning and identity through the innovative concept of simulations, from its infancy to characters actually using it. Through multiple points of view, Michelson questions what it means to define oneself when one can simulate any experience. The psychological aspects of the book are what shine brightest, and one of my two favorite simulations is Patrick as a storm chaser. His reactions to simulated death, especially when faced with real consequences, felt incredibly authentic. Michelson does well in mixing all the aspects of this speculative technology in a meticulously researched historical backdrop. Eric puts himself into the heart of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and it is amazing how the writing can ground the futuristic premise in a realistic past. The writing is tight and thoughtful, and there are plenty of unexpected and often heartbreaking twists, making Anticipation Day a fantastic, deeply immersive read. Very highly recommended.
