In Are YOU a Princess? by Heidi Zhang, we are introduced to a little girl named Sophie who wants to dress up like her friends at school, but cannot due to financial issues. Sophie was upset about this, but she understood. Then she decided to make the money herself by setting up a boba stand next to her mother's food truck. Sophie didn't make much money that first day, except from Abuelita Lola, who had her food truck next to Sophie’s mom's. Sophie soon begins selling out of her boba drinks daily, and soon enough, she has the money for her very own princess dress. But Abuelita Lola can no longer get around like she used to because of her age. Sophie knows that, just like her mom, she has to make money to survive, so she chooses to buy Lola a wheelchair instead of keeping her princess dress. Because of her generosity, her elderly neighbor can continue to work.
Are YOU a Princess? is an adorable and fun read with a heartwarming storyline. It’s easy to relate to Sophie, growing up without much money and just wanting to fit in with her classmates. There are many families living paycheck to paycheck, and this shows the young reader, who might happen to be one of those families, that it is normal for many. You instantly connect with the main character, Sophie, as you follow her story. This book also teaches an amazing lesson that material possessions aren't always important. When Sophie uses the money she earned to buy her neighbor a wheelchair and the means to continue to work, it teaches kids the gift of giving. It’s a beautiful message to pass on to the young reader. The illustrations by Gin Tran are also very beautiful and bright, which makes it easier to keep a child’s attention. Heidi Zhang has done a wonderful job with this book and delivers a strong message to readers. I am looking forward to more of her work in the future.
