In Allen Rebot's At Death’s Door, Kayla wakes up alone in a snow-covered forest after a car crash with no memory of how she arrived there. With no phone and little protection from the cold, she moves through the silent woods until she reaches a secluded house that appears maintained yet empty. Inside, she finds warmth and signs of recent activity, but every exit is blocked. As she searches for a way out, she is drawn into a series of spaces that reflect places from her past, where each passage requires a key. Something follows her, adapting to her movements while another presence interferes with her attempts to leave. Kayla must continue forward while the house reshapes itself around her, with no clear rules

Allen Rebot's At Death’s Door is a spectacularly twisty, unique story. I went into it expecting it to be great, and it ended up being even better. Kayla is likable and easy to connect with, and the anxiety of waking up injured in an isolated house that has an objective of its own transcends the page. Her likability increases when the author shows us how she treats what she meets inside it. The author also introduces Jaime, Kayla’s childhood friend, who responds to fear with patience and reassurance. All the settings feel cinematic, from a dollhouse interior that stretches into towering rooms where furniture rises, to a basement passage marked by flickering lights and scratched symbols. Readers who adore claustrophobic, textured supernatural tales with a philosophical bend will love this book. Very highly recommended.
