Heather McKenzie’s Atomica: Between Sea and Sky starts with the story of a then-young waif named Eva who was later rescued, hired, and trained by a gifted Sage called Zoleya. Owing her life to Zoleya meant vowing to be her best guardian at all costs and whose duty is to protect her and her special powers and abilities to save the planet. A disastrous shipwreck sidelined Eva’s mission when she unfortunately got separated from Zoleya and almost lost her life. She was ironically saved by another survivor named Kade, a Nihila hunter cursed to eliminate beings like Zoleya. Going against his destructive nature could be his end, but saving and protecting Eva is a compulsion that he can’t ignore even if it wounds him. Eva and Kade knew that they had to work together and collude with other castaways to survive being marooned on a mysterious island after the shipwreck. They’re continuously threatened not only by its peculiar elements and unusual flora and fauna but also by a corrupt troop of assailants who want to capture Eva. Zoleya’s future remains in peril as long as Eva, her guardian, is faced with dangerous uncertainties. Will Eva and Kade eventually choose to revert to their original missions or find it better to forge a mutually beneficial destiny together?

Atomica: Between Sea and Sky by Heather Mackenzie weaves an atmosphere tinged with wretchedness and conflict with emotionally tugging moments. Dramatic scenarios are complemented with well-written, highly descriptive imagery and action. The vivid and intimate narration combined with its compelling plot and fast-paced scenes grabs the reader's attention. This is an overall absorbing read that appeals to the senses and imagination. This also makes the reader easily connect with the well-developed characters. The narrative is laced with themes of identity, kinship, loyalty, tenacity, courage, resilience, ambivalence, sacrifice, and love. Highly recommended not only for young adult readers but also for fantasy action and slow-burn romance fans who enjoy a gripping read.
