The Fall of Hades by Ashish Thomas follows Hela, daughter of Hera and Xéros, as she fights to uncover and reclaim her family’s erased history. After defeating Thanatos and escaping Hades’ assassination attempt, Hela embarks on a perilous journey with Ophion to save her poisoned father, Xéros. They traverse dangerous lands and mystical archives, seeking to undo a crucial moment that trapped Xéros in a near-catatonic state. Hela enters the Mnemeion, a realm of raw memories, to rewrite past events, which causes fractures in the gods’ timeline and erases her parents’ legacy. Pursued by Hades and navigating divine routes, Hela faces visions and trials that shake her, but she presses on to break Hades’ control over forgotten souls and restore her family’s rightful place in history.
The Fall of Hades: Myth Retold by Ashish Thomas is a fantastically rendered journey through uniquely imagined worlds, all of which feel fresh and wholly original. I love the interactions that Hela has, for better or for worse, especially in scenes like her brush with the Oracle at Aornos, who reveals forgotten souls, including her father, Xéros. There are inclusions that readers who enjoy classic mythology will recognize, and familiar mystical artifacts such as Hermes’ sandals. There are others, however, that Thomas makes their own. The author does well in inserting Hades’ presence, amplifying it with triggers like his handling of ancient memory shards and a growing fissure between gods and forgotten forces. Overall, this story is a solid introduction to The Fall Trilogy, and I look forward to seeing what book two offers. Very highly recommended.
