Alex must master her new magical abilities—communicating with spirits through a bone amulet and reviving them using her aunt’s ring—while protecting her family and artifacts. She faces Elias Karnak, a Bone Master and powerful antagonist, who seeks control over these objects, particularly rings, daggers, and relics tied to bloodlines. Karnak manipulates allies and adversaries alike, including Rapalia Alpalis and Ramon Carboneras, creating traps and battles across Lundain and Rome. Thrown into these escalating threats, Alex must learn to wield her inherited powers against assassins and beasts, all while securing her aunt’s urn and artifacts, and emerging in her role as protector of the Bone Master legacy.
The Bone Mistress by Jayden Knight is an electrifying whirlwind of action, magic, and ingenious strategy, with a wholly unique premise. Alex is exactly the type of character that readers want to root for. She is young, but she still has genuine agency, and we see her as she races through cinematic cityscapes, evades formidable adversaries, and unravels mysteries that span generations, all while relying on her quick thinking, courage, and resourcefulness. Knight creates a world that is textured and feels alive and lived in. From daring escapes to shocking discoveries, the pacing drives the narrative forward consistently, and with tight writing and the potential for more to come, fans of singular, fast-moving speculative fiction will find themselves utterly absorbed. I look forward to seeing what Knight offers next. Very highly recommended.
