Raluza was once a fair kingdom where people didn’t see a difference in color and there wasn’t any class distinction. That was until King Lavier restructured it, separating people into four quarters and different classes. Michael and a group of soldiers plan to storm the Palace of the King and restore the kingdom to what it once was. But can they succeed? There is more to this story than the quest for justice and equality. Destiny Hawkins’s Aveena: The City of Gold introduces readers to a dream world where people interact with those from another universe. There is beauty in the way the story is told and Princess Aveena comes across as a very symbolic and compelling character, one that readers will love instantly.
Aveena: The City of Gold is a book I loved for many reasons. First, the author displays great imagination, creating characters that are easily believable in an imaginary world. The writing is very accessible, laced with powerful imagery, and the narrator’s voice comes across clearly as well. There is a striking balance between the engaging dialogue and the vivid descriptions. Overall, the story is well paced and there are many surprising turns that readers will find very satisfactory. Michael is a compelling character with traits that will speak to many readers. It is important to follow him as he tries to make sense of the shining star, to becoming acquainted with the identity of the Princess, ultimately pursuing a dangerous yet fulfilling mission. The issues handled in this book are current, including critical social ills like class distinctions and discrimination. Destiny Hawkins is a good writer, and I’d love to see how her writing evolves.
