Prim Pawn’s middle-grade fantasy/sci-fi novel, Avery the Dogless Orphan and the Interdimensional Stray, presents an imaginative and captivating adventure, combining a mysterious island with a spooky past and the ability to traverse time and space with dogs. All young Avery wants is a dog to call her own, but her Aunt Laurel staunchly says no. Everything takes a turn the summer before sixth grade. Avery and Aunt Laurel embark on a journey to Beaver Island, situated in Lake Michigan. When Avery stumbles upon a scruffy terrier, injured and abandoned at the island's lighthouse, she immediately rushes to its aid. However, the animal control officer pursuing the dog has a striking resemblance to the interdimensional antagonist in Aunt Laurel's story.

Pawn’s novel presents a relatable and realistic protagonist in Avery as she navigates the challenging path of establishing her identity while grappling with unfair adult rules. Throughout her journey to self-acceptance, Avery evolves from a self-absorbed, chip-on-the-shoulder kid solely fixated on obtaining her own dog to a maturing adolescent who empathizes with others' struggles and sees them as potential allies rather than obstacles. The book has a slow start, but as the story progressed it was impossible to put down. Avery the Dogless Orphan and the Interdimensional Stray excels in its portrayal of the rich setting and fully formed supporting characters. From Aunt Laurel to Benji, the villains, the dogs, the cottage, and the island, Prim Pawn’s vivid descriptions bring these elements to life, allowing readers to immerse themselves fully in this adventurous tale. Great book!
