In Aww Fishsticks by Lenora Riegel, Pax the Perch lives in Seneca Lake with his mother, and he dreams of swimming to the swishing, cascading waterfall. But Pax is nervous and doubts his ability to achieve this. With encouragement from his mother, Pax sets off on his perilous journey. Along the way he meets other fish and animals; some reassure him while others dampen his confidence. But Pax is no longer afraid, his confidence has grown and he starts to believe in himself so he pushes forward. Will Pax finally make it to the waterfall?Look out for the hidden creatures along the way; how many can you spot? If a tiny little fish can be brave, then maybe you can too?
Aww Fishsticks by Lenora Riegel is a very well-written story that is a perfect bedtime read for small children. I enjoyed the sounds made by the fish and animals and the simple language used, as it is ideal for children to get involved in the story and read along. It has a great message behind the story that you have to believe in your own abilities, even when others around you are mean and discouraging. The illustrations were perfect for the story and the age group of the child, and the concept of hiding creatures throughout the book will improve the child reader's observation skills. A perfect addition to any child's bookcase and would especially be recommended in schools where a lesson in kindness and self-confidence could be taught to children.
