Badge on Fire by Daniel Green follows Jack Singer, a Berkeley fire captain whose public life of service is shadowed by a private mission that began with a blaze at a villa on the Mexican coast. In the prologue, Jack watches a fire he helped set as it consumes a target tied to cartel violence, and the moment leaves him with both purpose and grief. Back in California, Jack’s days run on station routines, loyal friendships, and the steady pressure of raising his daughter, Ellie, after the loss of his wife, Jen. As protests flare and rumors of corruption swirl, Jack becomes convinced that powerful figures in Berkeley are linked to the Sangre Cartel through the Port of Oakland. When a late-night structure fire takes his crew to an address connected to Vargas’s network, Jack recognizes the call as more than a coincidence and senses he is being drawn into a trap.

Daniel Green’s writing leans into the rhythms of a fast-paced thriller, pairing action scenes with personal moments that keep Jack’s motivations clear and human. Firehouse camaraderie shines through the lively dialogue and grounded details, giving the crew a believable bond that heightens the stakes as danger closes in. It’s clear Green writes from experience. The novel also uses recurring symbols, especially fire as both destruction and purification, to tie Jack’s internal conflict to the external threat. Readers who enjoy propulsive conspiracies, cartel-driven tension, and an emotionally focused hero will likely enjoy Badge on Fire, especially if they like stories where justice is pursued in both the streets and the quiet spaces of family life.
