Percy St. John's father was murdered in a robbery in Brixley, Surrey, leaving him an orphan. E.A. Allen's The Midnight Boy follows Percy's story as he finds himself placed in Saint Cuthbert's Asylum for Orphaned and Delinquent Boys in London. Percy lives a hard life in the orphanage under the supervision of the cruel Reverend Mortimer Lovecraft. But he quietly rebels by learning to pick locks from his friend Arthur. However, after Arthur's tragic passing, Percy escapes from the orphanage with his Guardian Angel, Cosmo, a cat. He finds a job at Tobias Finermann's locksmith shop, but struggles to win the trust of his granddaughter, Hannah. Meanwhile, Mr. Finermann seems to be involved in something dangerous. Percy and Hannah must now find out what he's up to.
The Midnight Boy is a captivating coming-of-age tale filled with heart, mystery, and a hint of the supernatural. Author E.A. Allen weaves an engrossing narrative that immerses readers in a young orphan boy's journey of self-discovery, as he navigates loss, unexpected friendships, and the bonds of found family. The fast-paced plot covers different genres, including young adult drama, survival, and mystery. The author also incorporates elements of the supernatural, making the narrative all the more intriguing for the reader. I loved the scenes featuring Cosmo and Percy, and Percy and Hannah's entertaining back-and-forth had me chuckling out loud more often than not. The main characters have likable personalities that readers can relate to. I also enjoyed how the book ends, with Percy getting the opportunity to make a difference in the world. It's a fantastic book that will resonate not just with young adults but also with older readers seeking adventure stories full of resilience and hope.
