With Bailey & Daisy’s Great Treasure Hunt, Shawn Allen Stewart pulls young readers right into the lively world of two real-life rescue dogs. Instead of relying on the usual cookie-cutter backyard tropes, this book focuses on something much sweeter: genuine curiosity, teamwork, and the bond between sisters. The setup is classic fun. Daisy discovers a faded map under an old oak tree, and suddenly a normal morning turns into a full-blown expedition through woods, past barns, and right up to a riddle-loving raccoon. What makes the story click is the dynamic between the two dogs. You’ve got Bailey, the calm Great Dane who likes to think before she leaps, constantly balancing out Daisy, a tiny terrier mix who is basically powered by pure enthusiasm. It’s a fun dynamic kids will instantly recognize, and it quietly teaches a solid lesson: at the end of the day, real treasure isn't buried gold; it's the loved ones you share the trail with.
Plenty of books for the four-to-eight crowd lean on cheap gags, but Bailey & Daisy’s Great Treasure Hunt gives a young audience a bit more credit. Shawn Allen Stewart weaves interactive riddles directly into the plot and concludes with thoughtful questions that prompt children to reflect on what they value most. Mozhdeh Tohidi’s illustrations bring warmth to the pages, giving both dogs expressive, distinct personalities that feel grounded in actual pet behavior. It’s clear these characters are based on real dogs, and that affection seeps into every page. More than just a cute tale for storytime, this is a charming series opener that will have kids looking at their own backyards and their own pets a little differently.
