Bala-Gala The Brave and Dangerous by Gita V Reddy, illustrated by VC Arts, is a delightful bedtime story for young children. Bala-Gala can be many things – a deer, a crocodile-scaring tiger, a dinosaur, or a monster-defeating dragon or whatever he needs to be. Sometimes his size or his roaring scares his friends as well as their enemies. But Bala-Gala loves his friends and protects them from being eaten. A thunderstorm puts a stop to Bala-Gala’s outdoor adventures and Mom calls him in – it’s supper time and it’s late. Then who is the little boy tucked up in bed with his cuddly toys? Could it be Bala-Gala, a little boy with a great imagination?
Bala-Gala The Brave and Dangerous is a charming and colorful story that young children will love. It has an almost folk tale feel to it, but at the same time is thoroughly modern. The length and the surprise happy ending is just right for bedtime stories. Young children can have great imaginations and they will identify with the little boy in the story, and the fun adventures he has in an imaginary world where he can be anything he likes. I love that Bala-Gala cares about his friends – no matter how strong and scary an animal he turns into, he always looks out for them by scaring off the nasty bigger creatures and monsters. This is a lovely lesson in kindness, friendship and being brave. The illustrations are bright and attractive and complement the well-written story. My two favorites were the monster “in the deep dark cave” and the butterfly under the rainbow. Gita V Reddy’s story would make an excellent addition to any child’s home or school classroom library.
