"Battle Heat" by Kelly L Lee is the sizzling story of Holly and Ares, a Titan and the God of War respectively. Holly has been given to Ares as his custodiaris, basically servant and plaything, but Ares finds he is strangely reluctant to take advantage of her. She is spirited and tough, and won’t bow down to him. He finds that annoying but also attractive and so a sexually tense relationship develops between them. Ares isn’t popular, even with his own family and especially his ex, and his enemies see a way of getting at him through Holly, who also has enemies of her own. So the couple, besides sparring with each other, have other increasingly dangerous battles to fight. But even the God of War can go too far sometimes.

This novel presents an interesting coupling of mythology with modern paranormal romance. There is just one point where a flashback on events that concerned Hera, Ares’s mother, slows the action a little, but we quickly move on afterwards. The book follows on from "Murdering Eve" in the 'Four Realms' series but successfully stands alone. The author gives enough information for us to glean what has happened in the past between the major players and understand the settings and action. The existence of the four realms, Earth, Olympus, Titus and Faery, between which the characters travel when necessary, give an extra layer of originality and interest to the novel. This is a steamy, escapist and very entertaining read.
