If you’re looking for your next thrilling action novel then your search is officially over with Alexander J. Kenji’s military thriller Battle of the State. The plot follows CIA agent Oliver Bellows as he intervenes in the Slovakian elections to prevent the rise of a dangerous neo-Nazi group whose influence in both the political world and the criminal underworld has set the stage for a coup that could lead to unparalleled destruction across Europe and beyond. Oliver is an excellent protagonist for the tale with a skill set to accomplish his goals and a personal stake in events to keep the reader invested in his actions. The author wastes no time in establishing an antagonistic force that will test Oliver’s skills to the limit with nail-biting tension and pulse-pounding moments of action, growing the character throughout the narrative.
Alongside Oliver’s story is the journey of Mossad agent Sarah Harel who is hunting escaped Nazis in South America when the events taking place in Slovakia draw her focus. Alexander J. Kenji’s skill for characterization is evident as the reader is given the opportunity to learn more about Sarah and Oliver during their journeys, constantly peeling away layers until we find ourselves with a pair of well-rounded and dynamic heroes who will stay with readers long after they finish the book. Battle of the State is an exciting rollercoaster of a novel that portrays the back rooms of politics in which power is traded and the lengths that ambitious and villainous sorts will go to in securing that power. A thrill from start to finish, I recommend this book to all readers.
