Andrea Beck’s Below the Surface is a young adult novel that examines the challenges of fitting into a new community, the burden of judgment, and the effects of tragedy. Set in the seemingly perfect town of Oak Park, the story follows Emily Libert, a sixteen-year-old artist who moves there with her family, hoping for a fresh start. What begins as a search for belonging quickly becomes a distressing ordeal when a classmate, Matt Graft, goes missing after a party, and suspicion falls on Emily’s boyfriend, Ollie. Beck captures the dynamics of small-town life, where appearances often mask deeper tensions. The narrative is driven by Emily’s perspective, allowing readers to experience her struggles with acceptance, her budding romance with Ollie, and the unraveling of trust within the community. The author’s depiction of teenage friendships and high school clique pressures feels authentic, with characters that are complex and flawed, making them convincing.
The pacing is steady, with moments of suspense that engage readers. The mystery of Matt’s disappearance is skillfully woven into the plot, creating an atmosphere of unease that reflects Emily’s own feelings of alienation. As the investigation progresses, the author examines themes of prejudice, fear, and the repercussions of jumping to conclusions. The emotional impact on the characters is evident, especially as the truth about Matt’s fate is revealed. While the novel addresses heavy topics such as grief, betrayal, and mental health, it also offers moments of hope and growth. Below the Surface is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged story that examines the fragility of trust and the impact of community judgment. Andrea Beck’s debut novel is a powerful exploration of the challenges of growing up and finding one’s place in an imperfect world.
