Beneath the Orchard Sky by E.N. Beck follows Lucy, a UX designer from New York, who suffers intense heartbreak after her long-term boyfriend, Neville, suddenly dumps her. To make matters worse, she loses her job and finds out her beloved grandfather has passed away. Lucy travels to her hometown, Plum Creek, for the funeral and is surprised to learn she has inherited half of her grandfather's cidery. During her return, she reconnects with her brother, Eric, his pregnant wife, Trish, and helps with the funeral arrangements. Along the way, she bumps into Jack, Eric's best friend, who used to tease her a lot in high school. But after spending time with him at family events and in her grandfather's orchard, they form a deep, undeniable bond. Will Lucy accept Plum Creek as a place of new beginnings, or is she just passing through?
E.N. Beck's Beneath the Orchard Sky is a heartwarming romance story that blends themes of resilience and second chances. It is also a moving tale of Lucy's brave journey to self-discovery despite the deep sense of defeat she feels initially, after losing her relationship with Neville, her job, and her grandfather. Through reconnecting with her family, confronting her grief, and accepting Jack's support, she slowly begins to understand herself better and grows into a more balanced version of the person she wants to become. Beck's evocative prose ties everything together beautifully and paints a striking picture of Plum Creek, Lucy's world, and the people around her. I enjoyed getting to know each character intimately.
