Little Deaths All in a Row by Elizabeth Earley surprised me in ways I never expected with its depth and the author’s ability to communicate complex thoughts so that readers not only understand but also enjoy it. The author examines the paradoxical relationship between sex and death by sharing intimate stories, musings that are philosophical in nature, and a superior storytelling style. The author discusses personal experiences, memories that shaped her, the impact of trauma, near-death encounters, and how intimacy, mortality, love, and loss are linked. The concept that everything, every experience, encounter, or love is a “little death” was the highlight for me. The book took me through time and space, blending mythology, spirituality, and science fiction to discuss what is most intimate to human nature.
Elizabeth Earley is a gifted writer who makes you see life and your own personal experiences with fresh eyes. This book challenges the binary ideas of good and evil, the profane and the sacred, and the idea that sex and death are not opposites but complementary forces that shape human desire. I picked up many insightful passages, and one of them was that the body has neural networks and not only stores memories but also produces thoughts. Little Deaths All in a Row offers well-crafted stories and a compelling discussion about the healing power of love. Most importantly, the concept of the Vivid, the references to Greek mythology, and the philosophical thoughts of authors like Descartes show this is a work from an author who is well-read and gifted. Her take on consciousness offers something unique. This book will appeal to anyone who enjoys philosophical discourse, quantum physics, and the intricate workings of the human body.
