Benny the Brave: A Story of Love, Loss, and Learning is written by Wanda Arleen Barajas and beautifully illustrated by Amelia Mangham. This true tale is about a cute little puppy who had to overcome two challenges in his young life. Benny, a rescue pup, is a small dog with a big heart. His “siblings” are two Great Danes. Once the adopted puppy settled into his new family life, he enjoyed running zoomies and playing chase outside with Luna, while the distinguished Milo watched over them. But one day while playing, Benny was hurt in an accident that changed his life forever. His recovery is thoughtfully documented in this poignant story that any child would enjoy reading.
I highly recommend Benny the Brave by Wanda Arleen Barajas. The plot is simple, but the moral is complex, which impressed me. In my opinion, a children’s story that can entertain while teaching a lesson is the hardest type to write. But it’s also the most rewarding to watch a child read. The author did a seemingly effortless job of penning this book. I would almost consider this one a parable. Why is it such a meaningful story? First, lonely Buddy finds love and acceptance in his adoptive family at a California shelter. Secondly, after the accident, the puppy is timid, but with a strong spirit and a compassionate family, he pulls through, although his appearance is altered. One of the most important morals of this story is that being different does not mean being “less than.” Although the characters are dogs, the lesson applies to humans as well. Read Benny the Brave!
