Bernie & Bertie by Mike Owens is a romantic comedy novel with criminal undertones. It will appeal to lovers of dark and twisted characters. Unambitious parents raised Bernie, and he got tossed from one home to another, growing into a calm monster. Taking out inconveniences was essential, like the insurance lady, the Bible salesman, a detective, and a host of others. He happened on Bertie, who was doing the “good” work by eliminating killer drunkards that had escaped the justice system. A drunk driver killed her sister and destabilized her family. Bertie was the yin to his yang. Both of them were overweight, not so good looking, had been through similar things, and loved wiping out inconveniences. It was all rosy until one of them discovered something that threatened their relationship. Will what they share survive the oncoming storm?

Bernie & Bertie is a book that drew me in and kept me interested until the end. Mike Owens, through this book, showed me that everyone deserves love no matter how irredeemable they are. Also, as much as this novel made me laugh a great deal, I felt sad. Parents, teachers, students, peer groups, foster parents, and even the justice system failed the principal characters. They were resentful of the hand that life had dealt them, which became anger, making them take the law into their own hands. I’m afraid that a lot of children today will become broken and angry adults tomorrow because of the failure of everyone who should protect and nurture them. Bernie & Bertie is a wake up call to everyone with children! I loved the flowing dialogues, language, and effortless continuity. I give kudos to Mike for making me fall in love with this serial killer book.
