Casi McLean's Between the Shadows is the third installment in the captivating Lake Lanier Mysteries series. It tells the story of two 21st-century friends, Mackenzie Reynolds (Kenzi) and Attaway York, who end up time-traveling to 1865 Georgia and end up amid the Civil War period. Their adventure is prompted by York, who stumbles upon a young woman stuck in a time loop originating from her timeline back in 1865. Dedicated to rescuing the woman (Izzy) from her fate, York convinces Kenzi, who has a time travel device called Tess, to travel to Izzy's era and intervene on the young woman's behalf. When the two friends venture into the 19th century, they both embark on separate storylines. York rushes to save his beloved Izzy, while Kenzi falls in love with James, a Civil War soldier who is badly wounded. Can she save his life?

Between the Shadows is a compelling time travel novel that incorporates history, romance, and paranormal elements. The action is non-stop, and it meticulously merges two stories across different eras. I love how each storyline affects the other and possibly the entire outcome of history. But don't worry! If you are new to the time travel genre, everything comes together perfectly in the end. Overall, this novel is well-composed. The time travel aspects are developed and explained in a manner that makes it easy for readers to understand. I love the cast of characters that have been established throughout the narrative. Casi McLean has woven a very detailed and engaging story around them. The twists and turns kept me guessing the whole time. I love the mind-blowing reveal at the end! I recommend this book to fans of historical fiction. I'm already eager to see what Casi McLean regales her fans with next.

The two friends undertake a risky expedition into the past using a time travel device previously developed by Kenzie's grandmother. In 1865, Kenzie is kidnapped by James Adams, an injured Civil War soldier on a quest to help his war companions. The last thing Kenzie expects is to fall in love with her kidnapper. Simultaneously, York, who has also been teleported to 1865, begins to search for answers regarding Izzy's plight. Between The Shadows by Casi McLean continues the Lake Lanier Mysteries with a sweeping and romantic journey through time, history, and the supernatural. Kenzi Reynolds encounters the ghost of Isabelle, who is a young woman doomed to a tragic fate during the Civil War, and she’s drawn into a mission that spans centuries. Through the same time portal beneath Lake Lanier, Kenzi is transported to 1865 Georgia, where she enlists the help of locals Attaway York and the wounded but noble James Adams. As she races to change Isabelle’s destiny, Kenzi must grapple with her own future, caught between the comfort of the present and the passion she finds in the past. At the heart of it all is a powerful question: Can love not only cross timelines but also anchor a soul in the right one?

Author Casi McLean has a real eye for detail and the spirit of history, and that has resulted in a beautifully textured dual romance that’s as rich in historical authenticity as it is in emotional depth. I was swept up in the stakes of Kenzi’s journey—not just the external danger, but the internal pull between two lives. The Civil War setting is vividly drawn, and the supernatural elements heighten the story’s emotional intensity without overwhelming it. This book wraps up the Lake Lanier arc with heart, drama, and poetic closure. Overall, Between The Shadows is a satisfying and poignant conclusion to the series and a perfect novel for readers who love romantic time travel, historical depth, and the tension between destiny and choice.

Between the Shadows is a time travel romance in the Lake Lanier Mysteries by Casi McLean. Kenzi Reynolds took time off work so she could be at home where her grandmother, Sandy, is at death's door. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that she would go back in time to 1865 without letting her family know. But when York comes to her, recounting a supernatural encounter he had with a young woman who is in dire danger, she and York use Tess to travel back in time and save Izzy O'Neal. While rushing to save Izzy, Kenzi and York face ruthless soldiers, and Kenzi is kidnapped. When Kenzi makes a split decision, she alters more than her own life. Will her family, and especially York, forgive her for her decision?

Casi Maclean has written a fast-paced, suspenseful story of love, honor, and dedication. The characters are adventurous, loyal, kind, and determined. The attention given to the historical background of the Civil War and the language differences adds to the story's authenticity. Many themes are addressed, mainly finding the person and time where you belong. Brady's apparent PTSD reminds us of the horrible effects war has on a person. Tess adds a smidgen of science fiction, providing an extra spin on the story's romance and leaving the reader with a sense of wonder. Some people feel they could be happy in another era, and in Casi's stories, they can experience this through the experiences of wonderful characters. Between the Shadows by Casi Maclean will appeal to fans of historical romance with a speculative twist rounding it off.
