Beyond Her Selfie by Preston Copeland is a heartwarming coming-of-age story that follows two endearing friends throughout their international travels. Robi and her best friend Marquetta travel through San Francisco, New York City, Lisbon, and Edinburgh during the summer following their high school graduation. Robi’s mother encourages her daughter to travel, believing travel is a form of education that helps in learning responsibility and increasing one's knowledge about the world. During the journey, they encounter various people, including a charming Uber driver to whom Robi is attracted and other travelers in Scotland. The story also explores Robi’s complex family dynamics and the two friends’ different personalities. While Robi is reflective and more reserved, Marquetta, who is an aspiring model, is flirtatious and enjoys attention.
I loved that Marquetta and Robi’s friendship is refreshingly real and that the novel highlights how the two friends navigate romance, jealousy, rivalry, and setting boundaries. I found the story suspenseful, such as when Robi’s family secrets are revealed and when the two friends experience a traumatic event in Paris. Robi’s reflections on her familial relationships, faith, history, and literature add depth to the story. Her growth is inspiring as she confronts her insecurities, learns to embrace her true self, and finds her own voice. The story offers an immersive adventure, including details about local food, architecture, historical landmarks, and culture from the cities they visit. Beyond Her Selfie by Preston Copeland is a beautifully written novel that readers will love for its authentic characters and captivating travel details.
