Imagine having the power to do just about anything, like Moses parting the Red Sea. Imagine that this power, a God-given power to do good, is a birthright because, in the grand scheme of things, you are a direct descendant of Moses. Imagine the reading of your grandfather's will and discovering that you have received a great gift, your grandfather's faith.
Orion was very close to his grandfather. They shared a strong belief in God and it is because of this connection that Orion was chosen to receive his grandfather's faith. But that's not all it is. Or, actually, yes that is all it is because faith is a very powerful tool that, when used effectively, can bring a lot of good to the world. For Orion, however, this faith includes some pretty spectacular abilities, much like his ancestor, the one who parted the Red Sea. There will always be evil in the world and evil confronts Orion shortly after he receives his inheritance. Tragic events start to challenge the young man as he slowly learns to grapple with his new gift.
T.J. Pulley has created a rather unusual story in Birthright that is told almost like a memoir. Orion, the protagonist, is the narrator and he leads the reader through an exciting chain of events that reaches an unexpected climax. The conflict between good and evil, the protagonist and the antagonist, keeps the reader second guessing as much as Orion does. This is a powerful story which mixes the idea of a superhero with an ordinary young man who inherits the faith of his ancestors, the faith of Moses. Well done!
