Black Bird by JT Bishop is a pulse-pounding tenth installment in the thrilling Detectives Daniels and Remalla series. In this nail-biting episode, Daniels and Remalla dive deeper into their investigation of the secretive Black Bird society. Not knowing who to trust, they keep their personal quest to infiltrate the secret society quiet, all while they hunt for the assassin, Rhonda and Margaret Redstone's partner, Winnie. The high-stakes investigation and constant interference by Margaret strain Rem's relationship with his girlfriend, Mikey. As Rem uncovers the reason for Damien Rook's grudge against him, he realizes how intricately their previous cases are linked. After another police officer is shot and Lexie Logan is almost killed, Daniels and Remalla, supported by their friends and family, take a huge gamble with their lives as they face the full force of Damien Rook and his society. Will they survive and finally be rid of the psychopaths who have affected their lives?

I've been a fan of the Detective Daniels and Remalla thrillers since I picked up Illusions. JT Bishop's easy-to-read writing style helps convey the intricate plotlines and story arcs that span multiple books and seemingly unrelated events. What truly sets this series apart from other police thrillers is its unique paranormal twist. Throughout the series, characters with psychic abilities and individuals practicing darker arts are introduced. Daniels and Remalla tackle these cases as they cross their paths, learning how to deal with the paranormal and gathering allies along the way. Unlike many police thrillers with invulnerable protagonists, Rem and Daniels are refreshingly human. They are normal men driven by a passion for what's right and a need to protect the innocent. Bishop doesn't shy away from describing their emotional and physical struggles after trauma, from Rem's recurring PTSD to the strain the job puts on Daniels' marriage. Their dynamic made me think of Sam and Dean from Supernatural, and I am sure fans of that show will devour the Daniels and Remalla series.

In Black Bird by J.T. Bishop, Detectives Remalla and Daniels intensify their investigation into the elusive Black Birds. When they are called to a crime scene, they discover a peculiar clue lying beside the victim’s body, one that may link the murder directly to the organization. Realizing the danger, they turn to Lexi, an investigative journalist, hoping she can uncover the information they desperately need. Believing that gaining the organization’s trust is the key to taking it down, Rem and Daniels accept an invitation from Damien Rook, the powerful founder of Rook Enterprises, to attend his birthday party. The event promises the opportunity to connect faces with the names they have discovered and perhaps even gain access to the secretive network. But the deeper they venture, the higher the stakes become. The Black Birds are ruthless, and time is running out. Rem and Daniels must dismantle the organization before it destroys them or the people they love.

Black Bird by J.T. Bishop is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller. From the very first chapter, the story moves at a breakneck pace, packed with action, suspense, and tension that never lets up. It was a true rollercoaster ride filled with survival, danger, mystery, and trust. The writing style is engaging, drawing me in immediately and keeping me hooked until the very last page. The suspense is relentless; every twist and turn caught me off guard, and danger seemed to lurk around every corner. The characters were well-developed. Detectives Remalla and Daniels make an excellent team, and the addition of Lexi added intrigue. This is a superbly written thriller that I could not put down. Once I started, I found myself racing through the pages, eager to see what would happen next.

J. T. Bishop’s Black Bird is a gripping and suspense-filled thriller and is book 10 in the Detectives Daniels and Remalla series. Detectives Gordon Daniels and Aaron Remalla are longtime friends and partners, members of a team of detectives in a police precinct in San Diego. The two detectives are already investigating a horrific series of murders when they are faced with yet another investigation, even as the previous murders remain unresolved. The murders may or may not be connected. In the course of their investigation, Daniels and Remalla come across information about a secret society, the Black Birds. The two detectives have a gut feeling there is some connection between the society and at least some of the murders. They undertake a dangerous plan to infiltrate the secret society. The two detectives are under intense pressure to find the murderer(s). The tension and action ratchet up several notches with every chapter.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading J. T. Bishop’s gritty and engrossing murder mystery, Black Bird, for its extraordinary sleuths and multilayered and complex plotline. I was hooked by the backstory in the introduction, emphasizing the unknown and possibly deadly challenges facing the main characters. The author also provides a list of the characters, which helped a great deal as the story unfolded. I particularly liked the development of the two detectives, their incredible courage, and their commitment to protecting their families from the impact of investigating a potentially violent and extremely dangerous enemy. I liked the great camaraderie between Daniels and Remalla, their ability to communicate when they needed to change gears in rapidly developing situations. Both men are quick to think on their feet, knowing that a misstep could result in the death of one or both of them. For me, all the characters and the plot sprang vividly to life through the skilfully crafted dialogues between the detectives, their family members, or other detectives, or the nefarious and malicious characters that the detectives must deal with in their investigations. There is a wonderful undercurrent of humor in the conversations between Daniels and Remalla. The story was greatly enriched by several key secondary characters, those who are innocent, and those who are dangerous and evil, and the strong drama of interpersonal relationships. I highly recommend Black Bird to fans of detective stories with complex characters and a well-crafted, multilayered storyline.
