In Bleeding Out by Tanya Ross, Ember, Xander, and Will find refuge in the Obviators' underground haven, guided by Ember's telepathic link with her mother. Serpio's return disrupts the Elite, and their already-rolling strain boils over. Ember unveils empathic and stone-manipulating abilities, prompting disguises for the Alternity Gala. Kamar alters their Alts and a message hints at increased rebel strength. Xander deceives Sciolists, and Serpio targets Ava. A rescue mission reveals unsettling signs, and Xander's Maglev mission leads to confrontations with Serpio. Despite setbacks, the group remains committed to jeopardizing Serpio's immortality plans. When a member of the group faces capture, Serpio contemplates the power he could gain through them, and Ember, in his pursuit of absolute control and dominance.
There is a lot to think about after reading Bleeding Out, the third book in the Tranquility Series, and as much as I try to briefly lay it out, author Tanya Ross is just too good at packing a series of huge punches to make it easy. As with the past two books, the storytelling is exceptional. Loyalty continues to be a huge theme, and the connection between the group transcends to the reader with lines like, "And the crew of rebels had spun love knots around her heart. No matter what, she would champion them." And that's not even from Ember! There are heartbreaking moments, particularly as one of the group is subjected to a horrific ordeal and some moves in the Ember-Will-Xander love triangle start to show direction and some sizzle. Ross's world continues to surprise in the best possible way, and as the stakes ratchet up, we can see the books go from strength to strength. I will probably go bananas waiting for the finale in book four. Very highly recommended.
