Blood Moon Prophecy: Legend of the Nyx by Dilani Kahawala is the first offering in a new fantasy series that introduces you to Tilly Nyx. Eleven years ago, she suffered the unimaginable tragedy of losing her mother, her village being destroyed, and her sister disappearing. The one responsible for her mother’s death wants something from Tilly. Her mother did all she could to protect Tilly, but she could only do so much. Tilly has been hiding throughout her growing-up years, and she is about to discover that she is the last line of Obsidian emperors with the power to defeat dark forces. She has been brought up in secret and protected, which is also why she doesn’t know much magic while growing up. Now that a formidable enemy is after her, will she have enough time to learn how to cast sprites and make potions?
Blood Moon Prophecy: Legend of the Nyx is a highly entertaining and brilliant fantasy tale that readers of any age will enjoy. It begins with a situation that is logical enough: Tilly isn’t looking for trouble, but trouble soon catches up to her for something she is not supposed to do. But she is born a heroine, and she has to embrace who she is because none of us have a say or are given the choice of what lineage we prefer. And then there’s the map that Dilani Kahawala uses as an integral device to keep the thrill and tension in the storyline high, and it works, as Tilly does her best to protect it in memory of her mother. I like the way the sprites are used as an instrument of magic in this tale, which largely reminds me of Hellboy: The Golden Army. If you have any misgivings about reading YA fantasy, Blood Moon Prophecy: Legend of the Nyx will surely change your mind.
